Brač by car, camper or motorbike
The Split–Supetar car ferry takes cars from €26.10 but does not reserve a place. What that means for the queue, which vehicle class you fall into, and when Sumartin is the better port.
Updated:
Only the Jadrolinija car ferries take vehicles to Brač, on two lines: Split–Supetar on the north coast and Makarska–Sumartin at the eastern end. The catamarans, whoever runs them, are for foot passengers. Most drivers reach Split on the A1 motorway and go straight to the ferry port. If you come along the Makarska coast, the second line saves the detour.
How the queue works at Split
A ticket on the Supetar line is valid for one trip on the day shown and for any sailing of that line. It does not hold a place on a particular boat. Cars board in the order they arrive at the port, and Jadrolinija says it cannot guarantee boarding at your chosen time. Its own advice is to be at the port one to two hours before the departure you want, and earlier in the tourist season.
That matters most on summer Saturdays. Most holiday flats change guests that day, and the queue in Split can easily swallow two or three departures. If your dates are flexible, avoid Saturday for the crossing; a very early or very late sailing is also worth trying.
Buying online (jadrolinija.hr or the mJadrolinija app) saves you the ticket office but not your place in the queue. For a vehicle ticket you need the registration certificate at the time of purchase. With a rental car whose plate you do not know yet, there is a "rental" option in the shop. Check that your hire agreement allows ferry travel to the islands.

Supetar or Sumartin?
Supetar is the default. It has up to 14 departures a day and leaves from Split itself. Sumartin is a smaller port at the eastern end of Brač with three to seven departures a day. Its advantage is that a ticket there is tied to a sailing, so your place is reserved. You should be at the port 45 minutes before departure. A car up to 5 m costs €27.00 between 1 May and 27 September and €18.70 outside that period.
If you are driving south along the coast from Split towards Makarska, Sumartin spares you the trip back to Split harbour. From Sumartin you drive across the island. See Makarska–Brač for the timetable.
