Makarska to Brač ferry
The Jadrolinija car ferry from Makarska lands in Sumartin on the east of Brač after about 50 minutes. Unlike the Split ferry, your ticket reserves a place on a named sailing.
Updated:
If you are already on the Makarska Riviera, or driving south along the coast, there is no reason to double back to Split. Jadrolinija line 638 links Makarska with Sumartin, a small harbour village at the eastern end of Brač. It is the quietest of the island’s car ferries, with fewer sailings than Split–Supetar but a guaranteed place.

Source: official Jadrolinija timetable 638 (PDF), checked Fri 6 Nov 2026. Times can change at short notice. The 2027 timetable has not been published yet. Until then the 2026 times are the best guide – they rarely change much from year to year.
A day trip with the car
In summer, leaving Makarska at 08:30 puts you in Sumartin around 09:20, and the 16:30 or the 21:00 from Sumartin brings you back. Both ends of the trip are fixed, which makes it easy to plan around a beach day or a restaurant booking. Out of season, Monday to Saturday, leave Makarska at 09:00 and come back from Sumartin at 15:30, which still leaves a few hours on the island.
Your ticket is your reservation
On line 638 you buy a ticket for a particular sailing and that sailing is yours, even if the queue behind you is long. Jadrolinija asks you to be at the port 45 minutes before departure. Buy on jadrolinija.hr or in the mJadrolinija app; the car ferries are not in the Direct Ferries system, so we cannot sell them. For a car you need the registration certificate when you buy.
If you can pick the day, this is the stress-free option for a July Saturday. Compare it with the Split crossing, where cars are loaded in order of arrival and nothing is guaranteed.
What it costs
The summer tariff applies from 1 May to 27 September, the lower tariff the rest of the year. Two adults with a car pay 2 × €6.40 + €27.00 = €39.80 in the season and 2 × €4.10 + €18.70 = €26.90 outside it. That is only 70 cents more than the €39.10 on the Supetar line in the season, and you save the drive through Split.

Sundays, bikes and pets
On Sundays and public holidays the pattern changes. Out of season the ferry leaves Sumartin at 08:00, 11:00 and 18:00 and Makarska at 09:00, 12:30 and 19:30. In May and in the second half of September the first Sumartin departure at 06:30 moves to 08:00 on those days. A bicycle costs €4.10 out of season and €6.40 in the season. On Jadrolinija’s local lines small pets travel free if they stay in a carrier, and larger dogs, muzzled and on a lead, are kept on the open deck.
Who this crossing suits
Drivers coming down the coast road or the A1 towards Makarska, and holiday-makers staying on the Riviera who want to see Brač for a day or longer. Sumartin itself is quiet. Bol, with Zlatni Rat, lies on the other side of the island. From Sumartin you continue by car or taxi, and we do not have an official bus timetable to quote.
Without a car, check the catamaran Makarska–Bol. Direct Ferries lists it, but none of the operators publishes it on its own website for 2026. Whether it runs in 2027 will show in the search once sales open, so do not plan around it yet.
For the rest of the island see Split–Bol and Brač by car or camper.
